Clubs needs and responsibilities It is the responsibility of the Sonoma County Horseshoe Pitching Club and its members to prepare the clay prior to a tournament, remove the covers, put the covers back on when through, keep score, paint stakes, fix coffee and cold drinks, (usually lemonade and cold water), make ice, (for cold drinks), buy donuts, set up the sign-in table, mow the lawn, edge the walkways, and do general maintenance during the tournaments played here. The more club members who are willing to help the easier it will be for all of us. There is usually a work party prior to one of our tournaments. This is normally held on a Tuesday prior to, or after league night. (NHPA sanctioned league begins on March 16, 2010. The proceeds from this raffle help the financial situation of our club. We are receptive to new ideas that you may have to improve club format. It is really fun, but some work is involved to keep our club active and growing. Ringers to All! Casey

Sonoma County Club Champions Since 1936

HISTORY:

In 1979 Yvonne Mauzey suggested that a perpetual trophy be created for our annual championship tournament. Tom Webb, Rio Dell Club donated the Redwood Burl. George Greeott, SoCo Club, fashioned a copper horseshoe and attached it to the burlwood. A search was made of all available records, and nameplates of past champions was affixed to the laquered front surface of the wood. The trophy will forever remain the property of the Sonoma County Horseshoe club. If ever a recipient moves from the area, or is unable to retain membership in good standing, the club shall obtain the trophy and hold until won by an eligible Sonoma County Member in good standing.

ELIGIBILITY:

Only the top 8 pitchers, with 6 or more months of continuous Sonoma County membership, and said member is in good standing as determined on the day of the tournament, shall be eligible to win the trophy.

Equipment

Equipment The following equipment will help you be more comfortable, some is mandatory:

Your own horseshoes and measuring devices
Enough money to pay the scorekeepers, plus your entry fee. Each player must pay the scorekeeper $.50 per game at the beginning of each game. You have the opportunity to earn $1.00 per game by keeping score. All pitchers are encouraged to learn and help when needed.
A $10.00 playing fee is charged unless otherwise stated of the schedule. Clubs purchase awards, pay for donuts and coffee. A percentage of the money goes to the NCHPA to assist with administrative expenses.
Neatness is encouraged. Club shirts are not mandatory, but are highly encouraged. In any case a shirt must be worn.
It is wise to take an ice chest with cold drinks and lunch. Often there is not a place close by to purchase food and drink. Beer is not allowed inside the courts during a sanctioned tournament.
Most players take folding lawn chairs and/or clamp on umbrellas. Seating in the shade is often not available.
It is advisable to bring a jacket when leaving your area.

Horseshoe pitching costs and qualifications

Each tournament at various clubs have an entry fee from $8.00 to $15.00. Here's how that works, if you win first place you get double your money back. If you win second place you get your money back. The remainder goes to the clubs for rent, food, drinks, donuts, paper supplies, and so on. It is your duty to pay a scorekeeper when one is provided, their charge is 50 cents per player per game.

At times there are no scorekeepers therefore it would be to your benifit to learn how to keep score as quickly as you are able.

Qualification consists of pitching 100 consecutive shoes with a scorekeeper to tally your ringers. This scorekeeper should be an officer in the club, but that's not manditory. The amount of ringers you pitch during that 100 shoe qualifyer will be your beginning average. An average is based on the amount of ringers one pitches during tournaments. See (Rule 11 Section D) for more information about this. If you pitch 16 ringers your percentage will be 16%, if you pitch 3 ringers it is 3% and so on.

Many people will practice frequently when entering a horseshoe pitching career, this will increase one's average quite rapidly. The object is always to get as good as you can.

President Casey Sluys at 7:00 PM called the Sonoma County Horseshoe Club meeting to order. Officers in attendance along with President Sluys were Greg Ellisen 1st VP and Kevin Smith 2nd VP. Being without a Secretary/Treasurer Gail Sluys volunteered to record the minutes of the meeting. Gail will obtain new signature cards at WestAmerica Bank with the correct signers.

Following the pledge of allegiance and moment of silence for deceased members, President Sluys introduced Doug Johnson, from Inverness, as a new member to our club.

Greg Ellisen nominated Gail Sluys be elected Secretary/Treasurer this nomination was seconded by Michael Jurian. Gail accepted the nomination and with a vote of the members present the motion carried.

At this time the minutes to the last meeting were reviewed. Rob Munderloh motioned to accept the minutes as presented, Sue Lichau seconded. Motion Carried. The Financial report was presented by Gail Sluys with Casey explaining the contributions made to the NHPF purchasing bricks in memory of Frank Cmelik and Ray Parnay. We received a letter, which was read by President Sluys, from Canine Companions for our contribution in memory of Frank. Our club also donated $100.00 to the Devil’s Brigade who provide horseshoes to our service men and women and are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Tournament director duties were passed out and a reminder to please remember to bring raffle prizes to the tournaments. Canned goods and garden stuff were ideas passed on about what to bring for the table. There was discussion about raising entry fees but it was decided to keep them at $8.00.

Everyone was reminded about a work party being held at the Yolo courts on the 4th, 5th and 6th of March and the dates of the Sacramento @ Yolo tournaments were changed to the 7th and 8th due to the Bowmen having a large competition on the original dates Sacramento had chosen.

Work Parties for our club – on Tuesday evenings before each tournament everyone is asked to turn 2-3 courts so all courts are ready for weekend tournaments.

League – Starts with daylight savings time will begin league at 5:00 PM and will move it to 5:30 PM, as days get longer to allow working people to be on time.

Last years league Champion was Sue Lichau, Greg Ellisen placed second.

Also congratulations to Sue Lichau for her 2nd place in the ladies B group in the Nor Cal Championships.
Congratulations to all of our Champions both first and second place, and to those that tried hard to beat them.

We now have GPS readings on all of the Northern CA club maps; Sue volunteered to make copies for all club members.

Bill Fulwider our NHPA lifetime member contributed $20.00 to our club.

Equipment needed for competitive horseshoe pitching.

Equipment; the following equipment will help you be more comfortable, some is mandatory:

Your own horseshoes and measuring devices
Enough money to pay the scorekeepers, plus your entry fee. Each player must pay the scorekeeper $.50 per game at the beginning of each game. You have the opportunity to earn $1.00 per game by keeping score. All pitchers are encouraged to learn and help when needed.
An $8.00 playing fee is charged unless otherwise stated of the schedule. Clubs purchase awards, pay for donuts and coffee from this fee. A percentage of the money goes to the NCHPA to assist with administrative expenses.
Neatness is encouraged. Club shirts are not mandatory, but are highly encouraged. In any case a shirt must be worn.
It is wise to take an ice chest with cold drinks and lunch. Often there is not a place close by to purchase food and drink. Beer is not allowed inside the courts during a sanctioned tournament.
Most players take folding lawn chairs and/or clamp on umbrellas. Seating in the shade is often not available.
It is advisable to bring a jacket when leaving your area.

Clubs needs and responsibilities

It is the responsibility of the Sonoma County Horseshoe Pitching Club and its members to prepare the clay prior to a tournament, remove the covers, put the covers back on when through, keep score, paint stakes, fix coffee and cold drinks, (usually lemonade and cold water), make ice, (for cold drinks), buy donuts, set up the sign-in table, mow the lawn, edge the walkways, and do general maintenance during the tournaments played here. The more club members who are willing to help the easier it will be for all of us. There is usually a work party prior to one of our tournaments. This is normally held on a Tuesday prior to, or after league night. (NHPA sanctioned league begins on March 10, 2009.) Please bring a raffle prize (valued at around $5.00) to our home tournaments. The proceeds from this raffle help the financial situation of our club. We are receptive to new ideas that you may have to improve club format. It is really fun, but some work is involved to keep our club active and growing. Ringers to All! Casey

Northern California Horseshoe Pitchers Association (NCHPA) Tournament Structure

Tournaments are scheduled from February to November, usually on Saturdays or Sundays throughout the season. Generally you will be placed in a 6, 7, or 8 person “round robin” according to your ringer percentage. This is established by pitching 100 consecutive shoes and counting to ringers IE; 4 ringers = 4%, 60 ringers = 60%. Your first tournament result will begin an average percent from the tournaments in which you pitch. Please be aware that round robins are made up from those who attend the event; therefore, it is possible that you may be competing against players who carry a higher or lower percentage than yourself. The results of each tournament are given to the National Statistics office (Natstats), which keeps a record of all National Horseshoe Pitchers Association (NHPA) members. You must sign-in no later than 9:30 AM unless otherwise stated on the NCHPA schedule. It is wise to allow ample travel time to avoid disappointment. The official starting time for most NCHPA events is 10:00 AM. It is wise to check the schedule carefully for the category of tournament prior to making travel plans. Be certain you are eligible to participate. Lower percentage pitchers may begin pitching at approximately 1:30 PM depending on the number of pitchers attending and the number of courts available. Please be advised that a 10:00 AM start time does not necessarily mean that you will play at 10:00 AM. The groups usually begin with the highest percentage players, in attendance, in the earlier groups, working down to the lower percentage players pitching later in the day. Most all Northern Calif. tournaments are mixed, by mixed it is meant that men, women, juniors, elders are grouped according to their ringer percentage . The 9:30 AM sign-in deadline is necessary because of the limitations in the number of courts and to organize the “round robins” as quickly and fairly as possible. If you know how to keep score, players are asked to assume to responsibility of keeping score.

NorCal Championships If you wish to compete in this tournament, in which you will play in your own percentage group fro the championship of that group, you must have competed in five (5) NCHPA sanctioned tournaments. New pitchers, after August 1st, need only three (3). This is a pre-registered tournament

California State Championships If you wish to compete in this tournament you must have competed in four (4) sanctioned tournaments before the August deadline. This is a pre-registered tournament.

NorCal Team Championships If you wish to compete in this tournament, simply gather up 4 members from your club and sign up. Each member of your team must wear his or her club shirt though. This is an 80% handicapped tournament and great fun. For more information please see nchpa by-laws

Health Benifits of Horseshoe Pitching

Here is what you do during a tournament of only 7 games: You walk 6400 feet per tournament including 40 warm up shoes 160 deep knee bends each time you pick up your shoes 320 swings of arm as you release the shoe. 20 tourneys per year. 128,000 feet or 24.3 miles 3200 knee bends 6400 swings of your arm. That’s not including league nights, and normal practices. If you include 400 shoes per week practice and league then you’re getting quite a workout. Much more than a poker game, darts, or many other games would give you!
